Following the signing of an agreement with Hotel Properties Ltd. Weligrama, Marriott International announced the construction of its first hotel in Sri Lanka. The Marriot Hotel Weligrama Bay Resort & Spa, the first Marriott property in the island, will have 11 levels and 200 rooms.
According to Simon Cooper, president and CEO of Marriott International for Asia and Pacific, for a firm that operates more than 3,700 hotels in 73 countries, Sri Lanka is an investment with “great potential” as it is famous for its sandy beaches and fishing. This makes it an excellent vacation spot for tourists all over the world.
The president of East West Properties Nahil Wijesuriya, explains that the complex is being built according to five-star category, with an area of beach 115 meters above Galician Matara in the South East.
He added that the firm that has been hired for the construction, West Engineering Services (Pvt), is controlled by the company. This ensures that they will have direct control over all aspects of the construction process, thus ensuring the highest standards of quality.
The hotel will have rooms with 640 square meters of flexible space, plus a wide range of services and entertainment that will include three restaurants, a pool, bar, spa, gym and beach area that should attract a lot of both business and leisure travelers.
2011 was declared the year of “visit to Sri Lanka” by the local government, which resulted in a record number of tourists in the first months of the year. Therefore, it is expected that tourism will be the main driver of growth in the coming years.
