The British government is already taking preventive measures against possible cyber attacks that could occur in the 2012 London Olympics, which will begin on July 27.

British State Secretary Francis Maude said they have been preparing for some time to help and protect the Olympic Games against cyber threats. They have assigned a special unit to oversee the cyber security of the event.

Maude added that an essential element of security is keeping up with emerging threats, as “our response must be fast and flexible”, because what works one day may not serve you in some months or even weeks later.

Websense, a global leader in unified security solutions for web, said in a statement that the games have been chosen to call “the first social Olympics.” The organizers anticipate that networks and electronic media will be more important than ever. For that reason, the online security is a constant concern.

Also anticipated is that the demand of the wireless connection during the Games will double because the organizers have established several measures to encourage the connection between competitors and fans. However, they have imposed strict limits on using social media among the more than 70,000 volunteers at the Games. This is to ensure that they would not jeopardize the reputation and security of the event.

Websense said that they have issued several notices to those that have purchased tickets to the games. In these notices, they will find what types of materials that they cannot license, transmit, exploit or publish including video recordings and/or audio for commercial purposes. They have also made note of the types of information spectators can share on social media sites.

This has created great confusion about what may or may not be shared on social networks, so that the British legal consultant Rachel Boothroyd gave an overview as well as guidelines and a summary will be useful tools for professionals in these areas.

They were also warned about the amount of fraud that can be performed on the occasion of the Olympic Games, including a lottery where the prizes are tickets to sporting events or money. Often than not, tourists who are unable to speak English very well fall prey to these types of illegal acts.

Websense  has assured the public that they will do what they can to protect the games against illegal acts , fraud and security issues with ACE, a new solution for web, email, mobile security and prevention against data loss.
